TOP 50 NEWSPAPERS IN AFRICA BASED ON WEB RANKINGS
The top newspapers in Africa are based on “web rankings”. Those rankings, according to www.4im.com, in turn are based upon an algorithm including “three unbiased and independent web metrics” extracted from three different search engines: Google Page Rank, Yahoo Inbound Links, Alexa Traffic Rank.
The website says the aim is to provide an approximate popularity ranking of worldwide newspapers based upon the popularity of their websites. There is a serious shortcoming in this approach, because the measure of popularity of the print publications is totally different—and a ranking based on ComScore produces a totally different result. Thus while Mail & Guardian online is top in South Africa, its circulation is much smaller than several other quality dailies and weeklies. The Daily Nation online, by ComScore ranking, places third in Africa. The ranking here, however, is a good starting point.
